Hello all,
Well done to all the presenters who were successful this afternoon with their oral presentations.
Six talks, six passes - very well done to Scott, David, Connor, Sam, Selma and Hollie.
The subjects were varied and interesting - Optic Pathology, Physics of Sport, Evolution of Technological Displays, Eye Prosthetics, Dental Radiography (my current area of expertise!) and Black Holes.
Illia, thank you so much for coming in to get a flavour of the talks and for your positive input too.
I thoroughly enjoyed the talks, your input, your research, your enthusiasm and more, excellent.
For those of you who were at the session today, I would like you to comment on how you felt the session went this afternoon:
- did it go as well as you had planned?
- what did you do well?
- could you have done better?
- did you learn something about yourself and your peers?
- what did you think about the feedback etc.?
Your comments will help next week's presenters.
How I ran the session was as follows:
Welcome to the session and the assessment, I had all the presenter's slides ready to go, the class decided on the running order (please see Connor's observations in the comments section), the presenters all delivered, with questions from me and their peers.
I advised when the 8 minutes was up as a guide to come to conclusion (5 mins is the minimum needed as per the unit descriptor, and 8 mins is the guideline for the upper limit).
Each presenter was given two feedback sheets at the start - one was to self-reflect and the other to provide objective feedback to one presentation of their choosing. I felt this worked really well.
I then provided my detailed feedback which today resulted in a full house of passes. It really was a very enriching session indeed.
Thanks in advance and well done again.
Mark
Today was a learning experience. It was great to listen to such diverse subjects and enjoy subjects and areas, I never thought I would. Everyone had their own personality and own strengths. It was great to be a part of that. My confidence was better than I expected from what I hear but I know after today - to work on time management and do not rush on particular points. My slides lacked in volume of research but I would like to think my talk made up for this lose. If I were to do it again, I would be knowledgeable in certain fields of my talk. I may have benefited from having que cards as I feel like a missed very value and interesting points. Bur nonetheless, I think I did a good job and managed to keep the audience engaged. It's helps massively that my classmates make me feel relaxed and at ease with great feedback. Hollies talk was exceptional with bold visuals and you could tell she researched alot into her subject. Scott's talk had interaction with the audience which made it more fun and knowledgeable.
ReplyDeleteHi Sam, this is fantastic feedback. And I particularly like how you have framed the opening sentence. I think we can all agree that a LOT of active learning occurred this afternoon. The individual and group learning aspect is so important. As I said in your feedback, you have a great deal of natural presentation ability. Impressive. This is proper, detailed and effective self-reflection here and bodes well for when we look at critical thinking, evaluation and analysis in the second assessment, which is Listening (TED talks). I would also say, if I may, that perhaps you are being overly critical on some points. Not a bad thing though, as you have detailed a lot of positives, and you should, it was a tremendous presentation. Thank you for signposting to some of the other talks too; that is both kind and accurate. Well done, Mark
DeleteToday was great once I got into it and the nerves settled, having the ability to choose when I went was great as it allowed me to prep myself up and listen to others talks. Everyone had such amazing topics and they were even better to listen too, as everyone had clearly done their research and it showed. Time management was a common issue and I found myself rushing through parts which lead to me missing a few points I wanted to make. However, despite this, the talk seemed to go well and I learned that even with my anxiety I was able to execute the presentation with relative ease. The feedback from my peers was good to hear as it showed that they themselves were just as interested in my presentation as I was theirs. Overall great experience and if I had to do it again I feel I understand what can be done to make it that bit better.
ReplyDeleteGood evening Connor, like Sam, this is a deep and heartfelt critique, so refreshing to read as an assessor. You make a brilliant observation about WHEN you delivered your talk. Sometimes you just need to get a read of the room and survey things. I do believe in democracy and normally the running order flows organically! I am glad that my feedback noted your confident delivery, with no hint of any anxiety from my feedback, which means that you had researched well, properly, sensibly and crucially, delivered. I really enjoyed going back in time for your one. They were historical as I lived through the evolution, ha ha. Peer feedback is crucial and something I value. Everybody played their part today. Very well done on a great piece of self-reflection and a really interesting talk. Have a great evening. Mark
DeleteToday was quite an experience, although I went into the presentation with a lot of nerves it was really a good learning experience. It was helpful that the topic of the presentation was my choice, it made it a lot easier and less nerve-racking. The presentation went a lot better than i thought it was, during the presentation i felt as though that i was not doing my best however, from the feedback i received from my peers as well as Mark showed me that i was a lot more critical about myself.
ReplyDeleteFrom my peers i learned quite a lot, they all chose topics that i was not very knowledgable in however, the way they explained them taught me a lot more and i saw a great example on how i can connect with an audience if i were to do this again.
Good evening, Selma. I see nerves as the 'performing edge' as I call it in my teaching. If presenters aren't nervous to a point, there is an argument that they aren't invested enough in their research. You take your studies seriously, and you did a great job today. I am delighted to read that you saw the session as a good learning experience. And that is exactly what it should be. I agree, the flexibility of a vocationally relevant topic of your choosing is far better than being allocated one, most definitely. It is perfectly fine to be critical, but not overly so! You did a great job with some incredibly complex terminology which you took in your stride, so very well done. I agree, the level of explanation across all six talks were a really big positive today, no exceptions. Great commentary, thank you. Have a lovely evening and for everybody in the class, best of luck with the Maths assessment tomorrow. All the best, Mark
DeleteThouroughly enjoyed doing my presentation, feel as though I came across well enough and answered the questions as best I could. Tried my best to not bore everyone to death with the interactive parts which seemed like a hit. Only thing I would critisise myself on would be my language being a little jargonous (theres that word again) and watching my time, but aside from that had a lit of fun putting it together and presenting.
ReplyDeleteHello Scott (I can do a good Poirot!) Thank you for your comments. You have a lot of natural ability and your training in the practice has clearly stood you in great stead. Impressive delivery and really interesting info. I feel that the interactive parts were a really big hit and you should be commended for holding the audience's interest. Very well done indeed and thank you for delivering a meritorious (ha ha) talk. I thought I would bat one back at ya! Cheers, Mark
DeleteThe presentations yesterday were an excellent experience and I really enjoyed it so much more than I anticipated I would. There were some minor points I didn't manage to discuss but other than that it went pretty much according to plan. I was concerned about my talk having poor structure or being dull but after the reflection as a group I like to think this wasn't the case and the time spent researching paid off. I think I spoke clearly, showed how my different topics were linked, kept my points simple, and used images to give a clearer picture to the class as I presented. Points of improvement for myself were I could have introduced myself, better prepared for questions, better managed my time, and have better rhythm (although I like to think this did improve towards the end). I learned that I have more confidence than I initially thought and actually, embracing challenges you may be apprehensive about can be rewarding and fun! I found all the other talks very interesting, engaging, informative and well researched, yet unique and individual. The feedback was a great chance for us to express our opinions which I felt was a highly positive experience.
ReplyDeleteEvening David, some really good points you make here. I did hope that although the presentation is of course pressurised by definition (it IS an assessment after all) that all presenters would feel comfortable, supported and in fact 'enjoy' the experience. Learning and assessment can feel uncomfortable at times. This is not a bad thing to come out of the comfort zone. Your research definitely paid off, with a very positive result indeed. I think you are right, the talk gained momentum as it went on. Perhaps that was due to the 'drafting' you talked about! Well done and keep up the positivity. All the best, Mark
DeleteOn Monday I had my first experience of listening presentation in English. I was pleasantly surprised at the level my classmates were presenting their topics. Unfortunately, I do not have a high level of English so I did not understand all the information. But their skills and confidence in presenting to the public were really amazing. I took into account some elements of performances, so it will help me in the future. I will present my topic the next Monday. But after so successful presentations from my classmates, I am worried I will be less successful. Anyway, thank you! I enjoyed it.
ReplyDeleteGood morning, Ilya and thank you. This is lovely feedback. Do not underestimate your language ability. From what I have seen and heard; you are doing really well. Remember, one of the functions of the question-and-answer session is to seek clarification, ask for more information, perhaps a personal opinion. I am so glad you have learned from the experience, and you have taken some positive points away, that's fantastic. Always look for the plus points - to be successful you will have a well researched topic (you are the expert here), nicely structured like the ones you saw on Monday and via the Moodle page and some good time management with questions answered, specific to your topic. I am relaxed, I only foresee a positive result. Trust your ability. I will acknowledge your slides on receipt. Thank you for attending and making these comments, a great way for me to start the day! Best, Mark
